Craigavon Area Hospital Clinic patients will receive a letter 4 weeks in advance of their appointment asking them to ring the appointments department to arrange a suitable date and time.
Patients for all other hospital clinics will receive a letter giving them an appointment date and time 2 weeks in advance.

CARDIOLOGY SECONDARY PREVENTION CLINIC
Secondary Prevention describes a number activities or measures that might be taken by patients with established cardio vascular disease in order to reduce their risk of a further event.

This is a nurse led review clinic set up in June 2003 for patients who have been diagnosed with a heart attack (Myocardial Infarction). Patients are offered an appointment at Secondary Prevention Clinic around 12months after their heart attack.

REVIEW AT THIS CLINIC WILL INCLUDE

Risk factor assessment
Assessment of symptoms you may be experiencing
Review of medication you are taking


THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PROCESS FOR YOU. RESEARCH HAS SHOW THAT REGULAR CHECKS CAN HELP IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF YOUR HEART.



STOPPING SMOKING IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING A SMOKER CAN DO TO LIVE LONGER.


Craigavon Area Hospital Smoking Cessation Specialist Service offers one to one, individual support for people who are ready to "Quit" (stop smoking). The Smoking Cessation Specialist Nurse will take you through the stages of stopping smoking, including preparing to stop, actually stopping and staying stopped.


The inpatient smoking cessation service offers

- Referral to Smoking Cessation Nurse
- One to one counselling throughout admission and a personal "Quit Plan"
- Advice on Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Zyban
- On discharge patients are offered further counselling as outpatient
- Referral to community service in their area


The outpatient smoking cessation service offers

- Appointment with smoking cessation nurse Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm
- Drop in clinic Lung Function Lab every Wednesday 1pm –3pm
- Referral to community service in their area
- Telephone counselling

What will happen at my first consultation with the Smoking Cessation Specialist Nurse?

Your Smoking Cessation Specialist Nurse will develop a personal quitting plan with you, based on your individual needs.

- How to prepare to stop
- Setting a quit date
- How to stay stopped
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Zyban
- Coping with withdrawal
- Weight control
- Relaxation techniques

How long will it take to stop smoking?
Your quitting plan will be tailored to your individual requirements. You may have as many (or as little) consultations as you need to help you through the process of stopping.


Will I stop smoking?
There is no magic cure. Stopping smoking requires willpower and personal commitment. Many smokers have quit and remained stopped. Having Smoking Cessation Counselling can double your chance of success.


What if I start smoking again?
If you don’t stay stopped don’t worry. Many people will have relapses before finally quitting. You can ask for further support at any time.
